On April 26, 2023, Rogers Communications and SpaceX, led by Elon Musk, announced plans to harness satellite technology to connect mobile phones in remote regions of Canada. Utilizing the Starlink satellite network, this initiative aims to extend coverage for 4G and 5G mobile devices, initially focusing on SMS services before gradually incorporating voice and data options in areas lacking traditional network access.
“In the future, these investments will deliver wireless connectivity, including access to 911, to even the most remote areas,” stated Rogers CEO Tony Staffieri.
This partnership follows a similar collaboration between T-Mobile US and SpaceX, revealed last year, which also aimed to enhance connectivity using satellite resources.
Additionally, last month, Canadian regulators sanctioned Rogers’ acquisition of Shaw Communications, valued at C$20 billion, under strict conditions. These conditions include financial penalties if Rogers does not fulfill its commitments to create jobs and invest in network expansion.
