SEOUL, Feb 1 (Reuters) – Samsung Electronics unveiled its latest premium smartphone series, the Galaxy S23, on Wednesday, presenting a significant challenge to its brand strength as the mobile market faces a substantial downturn.

The Galaxy S23 lineup features enhanced cameras and upgraded processors compared to previous models. However, analysts anticipate that initial sales may be sluggish as consumers tighten their budgets in response to soaring inflation.

Notably, the flagship S23 Ultra boasts Samsung’s first 200-megapixel camera sensor, allowing for clearer images even after enlargement, and utilizes Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile processor, which offers improved performance over the chips used in the S22 series. Additionally, the S23 is the first Samsung device to incorporate Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4070 graphics card, making it well-suited for resource-intensive gaming and live-streaming capabilities, aspects that are increasingly crucial for consumer assessment of smartphone quality.

Samsung is collaborating with companies like Epic Games to optimize the gaming experience on the S23. In the United States, the starting price for the base Galaxy S23 is set at $799, while the S23 Plus and S23 Ultra are priced at $999 and $1,199, respectively. Notably, Samsung has maintained these price points despite rising component costs.

The global smartphone market witnessed a historic decline in shipments during the October-December quarter, plummeting 18.3% from the previous year to 300.3 million units, according to IDC data released last month. This trend raises questions about the anticipated modest recovery in the mobile sector this year.

In light of this challenging landscape, analysts indicate that Samsung’s mobile strategy will shift toward focusing on profitability through premium products, including the S series and foldable devices. “Samsung can’t afford to focus on expanding volume anymore,” remarked Liz Lee, associate director at Counterpoint Research. She added, “It must boldly simplify low- and mid-range products, the parts of the market where Chinese competitors have caught up a lot.”

Samsung acknowledged that the decline in sales of its low- and mid-range smartphones was sharper than anticipated in the fourth quarter. With the launch of the S23, the company aims to enhance device interconnectivity in order to retain customers within its ecosystem, rather than allowing them to switch to competitors like Apple. However, analysts believe that Samsung still has considerable progress to make in this area.

In a unique industry development, Samsung announced that the cursor from its latest Galaxy Book laptop can interact directly with the Galaxy phone screen, allowing users to perform actions seamlessly. Users will need to upgrade their phone’s software to access this feature.
