Apple’s Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams will conclude his 15-year tenure with the company later this month. In a recent announcement, Apple revealed that Sabih Khan, currently the Senior Vice President of Operations, will succeed him. Going forward, the design team will report directly to Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook rather than to Williams.

Until his retirement later this year, Williams will continue to oversee the design team. Cook noted that Khan’s promotion has been anticipated for some time and praised him as a brilliant strategist. He highlighted Khan’s significant contributions to the company’s supply chain and his role in advancing new manufacturing technologies, including the expansion of Apple’s operations in the U.S. With a 30-year career at Apple, Khan’s dedication has finally culminated in this high-level appointment.

Cook expressed deep appreciation for Williams, stating that Apple would not be what it is today without his influence. He credited Williams for building one of the most respected supply chains globally and for being instrumental in the development of the Apple Watch. Cook stated, “Jeff and I have worked alongside each other for as long as I can remember, and Apple wouldn’t be what it is without him. He’s helped to create one of the most respected global supply chains in the world; launched Apple Watch and overseen its development; architected Apple’s health strategy; and led our world-class team of designers with great wisdom, heart, and dedication. I am and will always be beyond grateful for his numerous contributions to Apple over the years and his loyal friendship. Jeff’s true legacy can be seen in the amazing team he’s created, and while he’ll be greatly missed, he leaves the work of the future in incredible hands.”

In addition to his role in the Apple Watch initiative, Williams has been integral to the company’s health strategy and played a key part in the launch of both the iPod and iPhone programs. With Williams departing, Khan certainly has significant expectations to meet.
