Starting today, Garmin users can access Google Maps directly on their smartwatch, allowing for real-time, on-wrist navigation. The company announced that the app is now available for free in the Connect IQ store, offering straightforward turn-by-turn directions for compatible Garmin smartwatches. However, it’s essential to note that this feature is exclusively for Android phone users.
The following Garmin watch models are compatible with this new mapping feature:
– Forerunner: 165, 165 Music, 265, 265S, 570, 955, 965, 970
– Venu: 3, 3S, X1
– Vivoactive: 5 and 6
– Fenix: 7 and 8 series
– Epix: Gen 2 and Pro lines
– Enduro: 2 and 3
This update means that most Garmin watches currently available and those released in recent years can download the new app, provided they are paired with an Android smartphone. Once a destination is set on the phone, users will receive live notifications on their watch, guiding them as they walk, cycle, or run.
The smartwatch will vibrate at each directional prompt, allowing users to maintain focus on their surroundings instead of constantly checking their phones. Additionally, users can access the app to view the next three turns while their workouts continue to be tracked normally in the background.
Despite Garmin’s existing mapping capabilities, its street-level navigation has previously been a weak point for pedestrians. This update is a significant improvement for Garmin users, enhancing urban navigation, though it’s unfortunate that iPhone users will have to wait before experiencing this new feature.Mobiles
