Google’s recently launched AI Mode, integrated into the Pixel Launcher’s search bar, may soon be optional. Following its initial rollout, the company updated the launcher to include a mandatory AI Mode shortcut alongside the Lens and voice search buttons.

However, new developments suggest that Google is working on a feature that would allow users to disable this shortcut. In the latest version of the Google app (v16.26.64), indications have surfaced that Google is preparing to introduce a ‘Customize Pixel Search Box’ section. This section would include the option to turn off the AI Mode shortcut.

Strings discovered in the code include phrases such as: ‘Add an AI Mode shortcut to your Pixel Search Box,’ ‘AI Mode,’ and ‘Customize Pixel Search Box.’ The team at Android Authority also identified this evidence and successfully activated the new option manually. The design indicates that Google may be considering adding further customization features in the future.

While the official rollout of this feature has not yet begun, it appears to be in the final stages of preparation. Users are encouraged to report if they notice the option becoming available on their devices.
